99 - A Bear and His Boy - children's book review

A Bear and His Boy was published in 2007. It was written by Sean Bryan and illustrated by Tom Murphy.

A bear called Mack wakes up with a boy on his back. Mack is a busy bee and has a pretty packed schedule. He lacks free time but the boy on his back forces him to realize that it’s sometimes nice to relax.

A Bear and His Boy is a fairly simple story and every page has rhyme (eg: back, Zach, packed, flapjacks, etc). All of the sentence are fairly logical and well written.

One complaint about the book is the final pages. The bibliography should have been put a page or two later.

I have a feeling the drawings were done with Illustrator or some computer program. Nothing too complex... there’s a lot of white space and only five or six colors are used in the entire story (they save the prettiest color towards the end). It’s all very well done.

The message of this book is good, in that you have to take it easy once in a while. While a busy schedule is nice, it’s always good to vary things by doing something out of the ordinary.

Recommended.
