175 - Cute by Lida Dijkstra - children's book review

Cute was written by Lida Dijkstra and illustrated by Marije Tolman. It was published by Lenmiscaat in 2006.

Toby is a cute bunny and he wants to change that imagine. He gets an earring, a tattoo and a really loud chopper. He meets a girls who makes him realize that this new look isn’t the way to go.

I really like this book just because it’s probably meant more for adults than children.

It’s nice to have a character that’s going through a phase... I’m sure we all go through them and I’m not sure if young children can understand something like this... thus, I feel this book might be enjoyed more by adults. Perhaps parents could tell their children about how they got tattoos or piercings after reading a book like this to their kids (there seems to be a lot of people in Canada with tattoos...).

The illustrations are very pleasing to the eyes. The illustrator has created a pretty neat looking world. Most of the drawings are done on the same scale (the size of the main character doesn’t change too much).

I’m wondering about one page though. It mentions that “owl says...” but the owl is on the previous page... wouldn’t it have made sense to have the owl somewhere in the background on these pages instead.

The ending is just as whacky as the rest of the story... I’m not sure if this book is still in print but I’d recommend it to people with a quirky sense of humor.
