A Visitor for Bear was published in 2008 by Candlewick Press. It was written by Bonny Becker and illustrated by Kady MacDonald Denton.

Bear doesn’t seem to like having company in his house since he has a “no visitors allowed” sign in front of his house.

While cooking one day, a mouse knocks on bear’s door. The mouse wants to have a “spot” of tea with bear. Bear screams at mouse and makes him/her leave.

The mouse magically appears in various parts of the kitchen and gets kicked out over and over until bear can’t take anymore and has a nervous breakdown.

By the end, the bear and the mouse seem to enjoy each other’s company.

According to the cover, A Visitor for Bear is a New York Times bestseller. Well, I guess there must be a reason for that.

This book is near perfect. There’s quite a bit of drama with the angry bear and the typeface is varied well... parents who read this book can work on their voice acting skills.

The mouse tends to talk in a “British” way. His spoken English seems to be fairly polite.

The illustrations are done in watercolors, ink and gouache and there’s a certain softness to it all. The facial expressions of the bear are fun to look at.

Recommended.
