135 - Blackout - children's book review

Blackout was published by Disney/Hyperion Books in 2011. It was written and illustrated by John Rocco.

It’s a hot and loud summer night in a New York city neighborhood and no one wants to play a board game with the little girl/boy (I really can’t tell). Suddenly there’s a blackout and the whole community come together. There’s a block party and the family are all smiles. By the end, the board game is played by the whole family.

Blackout is a pleasant story... actually it’s a little too pleasant for my taste. If only the world was so simple.

The drawings are extremely well done... actually, maybe they are too well done. The angles are very imaginative. The “dark” scenes are drawn perfectly... a lot of time was put into all of these illustrations.

The main point of this story is that when we don’t have certain technologies (in this story it’s electricity), we have to revert to other activities to enjoy our time and sometimes that a good thing.

Blackout is a feel good story... not to my taste but if that’s your thing, this book will be perfect for you.
