Hedgehog, Pig and the Sweet Little Friend was written and illustrated by Lena Anderson and published by R&S Books. It was translated by Joan Sandin.

Hedgehog one night notices that there’s someone outside of her house. It’s a piglet and it’s lost. Hedgehog invited the piglet in the house and Pig, who’s hanging around, offers his soup to the lost and confused piglet. The next day, they all go into town and the piglet finds her mother’s bakey. Pig falls in love with piglet and they walk down a road of cupcakes at the end of the story.

Reading the inside of the back cover’s jacket, this seems to be part of a series so I didn’t find myself that intrigued in the story since I couldn’t figure out the relationship of Pig and Hedgehog. Is he just a friend or is there some background to these two?

Who is Pig and isn’t the piglet a little too young for them to date? Pig seems to be a young man or a teenager and the piglet seems to be really young... considering she gets lost and doesn’t know how to get to town, this would indicate she’s very young. Also, I’m wondering why this piglet has no idea where her mother’s bakery is when initially walking back into town... Maybe she doesn’t get out much.

Well, I shouldn’t think too much about the logic in this story.

One nice thing about Hedgehog, Pig and the Sweet Little Friend is how Hedgehog so willingly allows the piglet in her house. We always hear about trigger happy Americans that’ll shoot anything that approaches their front doors but I have a feeling the author who’s from Sweden doesn’t really think about these kind of things.

There is some rhyming and one decent pun about the pig’s friends “pigging” out. The text is all four sentence stanzas.

The illustrations are on the soft side, so I would think that this story would be better suited for a female audience. I can’t recommend reading this book until I’ve read the rest of the series.
