197 - Free Jazz Vancouver - The Mission sessions...

Things sometimes have to come to an end…

It looks like Free Jazz Vancouver is headed into the abyss. The unknown awaits the group as our main rehearsal space has… gone.

Walter Lovell (drums) lived in Mission for roughly about a year. For the past four months or so, me (Mark Quigley… trombone) and Walter had been focusing on playing together, one on one. How many times have you heard free jazz played by only drums and trombone? Not too many, I’m sure.

It’s strange since I’ve known the guy for over 15 years. This was the first time for us to actually play one on one… at first, it was awkward, not knowing what to do, but after session after session, we started to interact more and more. We started to feed off each other’s thoughts and actions.

I’ve heard many free jazz groups on Youtube… one thing that I notice is that with the “amateur” groups, there really isn’t much communication happening. One person ignores the other for what can be an incredibly long time, while the other reciprocates. Sure, this is one way of doing it but for the audience this may get a bit tiresome. I never felt this happened with me and Walter.

Well, Walter has moved to a new place where he can’t bash away at his drums as much. The Mission sessions have come to a close. What direction will Free Jazz Vancouver take in the near future… it’s up to you to check Youtube and this blog.

Here is our last take in Mission. I’m jumping up and down on my trombone while Walter uses the side of his sticks to make a neat clicking sound. Later on he uses his ride cymbals to the maximum effect… creating a mysticism feel. By the end… I’ve stuck my hand into my bell and I’m making some rather rude sounds. I hope you enjoy this take and have a nice day…
