195 - Free Jazz Vancouver's Motto

Colin bashing away_3510

Another evening of free jazz...

The duo sessions with Walter Lovell continue. We’ve been recording on a weekly basis with my Zoom recording device.

I’ll disclose a special secret of Free Jazz Vancouver... our motto. Any idea what this might be? And is it a good idea for me to disclose this?

Ah, I figure there are only a couple people in this tiny world that are going to read this so here goes... “Quantity over quality”

Yes, that right. Why do many people not post stuff on Youtube? Probably because they go through their recordings and figure that they’re not “worthy” of being put up. They’ve played a few slips or their music just doesn’t match up with the “greats”. Well, how do you expect to improve if you don’t listen to your screw ups... and are they really screw ups?

The beauty of free jazz is that you can’t consider mistakes, mistakes. It’s all crap played from the “bottom of your heart” (if done properly).

Well, this is turning into a really flakey blog write up.

The recent recording I put up on Youtube features a KORG oscillator. I had never heard of one of these thing before. Walter pulled it out and started to muck around with the thing... considering he probably has never recorded with this thing, the music sounded free, imaginative, mysterious and passionate. I really had a great time for about a minute towards the end, arpeggiating over and over. I couldn’t have done this with any other music (I could have but most people would think I’m a loony... or maybe they already do).

I sincerely hope you enjoy this recording done on October 23, 2013.
