Flora’s Very Windy Day was published by Clarion Books in 2010. It was written by Jeanne Birdsall and illustrated by Matt Phelan.

Flora is painting with her brother, Crispin, next to her. Crispin spills Flora’s paints and she gets angry. The mother tells the children to go outside. Crispin has “super-special-heavy-duty red boots but Crispin’s are “regular old purple boots”. That day the wind is very strong and Crispin is blown away. The sister takes off her boots to save her brother. Flora meets various characters and elements and in the end gets her brother and herself safely back to earth.

Flora’s Very Windy Day is a variation on meeting characters... she always says the key phrase, “He’s my brother and I’m taking him home.”

This story is about taking care of your sibling(s). We all hate each other sometimes but in the end we really should take care of each other.

I like the illustrations in this book. They’re dreamy enough and the little boy flies around in all sort of strange positions. I like how the white space in used at the beginning and the end of the story (the middle section uses a lot of color for the autumn leaves and the sky), giving the story an A - B - A style form.

Overall a pretty nice story.

Oh, I was just wondering about the pricing of this book. It’s $16 in America and “higher” in Canada... I can’t wait for the surprise of how much this book’s going to be...
