Mom, it’s my first day of kindergarten! was published by D&M Publishers in 2012. It was written and illustrated by Hyewon Yum.
It’s a little boy’s first day at elementary school and his mother is nervous as hell. He’s always got a quick answer to his mother’s nervous responses on the way to school. By the end the boy has a great time and tells his mother all about his day.
The topic of this book is a good one and I’m sure a lot of us can probably remember the first day of school... for me, I went to a French immersion school and I remember the teacher making me say, “Est ce que je peut alles a la toilet (I’m sure I spelt some of this wrong...)”. I still wonder to this day why my parents made me go to this school... I can’t really recommend French immersion by the way.
In most children/picture books, the child is usually the nervous wreck... in this story the situation is reversed and to show how much of a nervous wreck the mother is, she’s drawn small with a sickly blue color.
The illustrations are drawn with water color and color pencils. The drawings aren’t that polished but it all works quite well. There is a lot of white space used (the carpet/floor in the kindergarten is white...). The ending has a feel good hug... I can’t really remember hugging my parents after finishing school... maybe times have changed.
