38 - Fast food in Vancouver

In the past two weeks, I’ve gone to a couple of fast food restaurants.

Last week was Burger King. This week was A&W.

Part 1

Since returning to Vancouver, it was the first time for me to visit Burger King. When I was a child I went to Burger King on occasion and I was always mesmerized by the size of the Whopper.

Many years later, I’m not that surprised by the size of it but never-the-less, it sure fills you up.

This time I decided to get a Double Whopper with cheese combo. This may have been the first time in my life to get this, and on the whole, I was satisfied.

When I ordered the burger, the cashier asked me whether I wanted cheese with this. I asked, “Is that extra?” and the cashier proceeded to say “Yeah” and giggle. He was a young man who didn’t really care that much about his job, which was alright with me. I’ve done that kind of work in the past and understand that the work can be rather menial. I suppose he was laughing at the fact that these burger joints have to suck the money out of you bit by bit.

Can you imagine McDonald’s asking you whether you want cheese on a Big Mac? 1 point for them!

While not quite as fast as McDonald’s, the food arrived promptly enough and I asked the woman who gave me my tray with food whether I could get two packages of ketchup. She gave me three which was kind of her.

Before eating the food I decided to take a few pictures. I was snapping away trying to get the perfect shutter speed on my camera. I must’ve taken about twenty pictures. As I sat down, some guy sitting across me starting asking me a few questions about what I was doing. One of the questions was, “Is that some kind of art thing?”. Well, I guess so. Not too many people will ever take pictures of a Burger King hamburger seriously.

The price of this was a bit over $10... inflation sucks.

Part 2

A few days ago I decided to go to A&W.

I went the A&W restaurant on Seymour street in downtown. This restaurant seemed pretty “new” and the number of A&W restaurants seem to popping up here and there in the lower mainland. I wonder what’s the reason for this?

I walked into the restaurant and looked at the menu from a distance so the clerk wouldn’t rush me with the “Can I help you?” question. There were two south-east Asian woman working the till. The woman who was pushing the buttons on the register took my order and... called me “sir” several times.

I still remember many years ago when I worked at a Subway fast food restaurant, that a man told me not to call him “sir”. I proceeded to ask him what I should call him and he gave me his first name. I made sure to remember his name, but he never came back... I felt my efforts were wasted.

I’m sure I’m not alone in Canada but if you think really deeply about it, it’s a strange feeling being called “sir”. I don’t mind it though... it makes me feel like an “important” customer.

So, today I order a Mozza burger. There’s really no reason why I ordered this thing besides having this vague recollection that a Teen burger just doesn’t fill you up.

Mozza Burger

Well, a Mozza burger doesn’t fill you up either. The cost of this thing was a bit over $9... I found this a little pricey for what I received.

The root beer was good. I like how A&W doesn’t put any ice cubes in your mug of root beer... it seems like every fast food joint fills the cups three-quarters full of ice.

At the Counter

Well, the A&W experience wasn’t that eventful... oh, come to think of it a couple of deadbeats (male and female) came in to use the washroom and they both went in together. I’m guessing they were doing some special substances in there. I can’t be surprised since the location is walking distance from Vancouver’s skid row area.
