Pepi Sings a New Song was published by Beach Lane Books. It was written and illustrated by Laura Lyungkvist.

Pepi (as you can probably guess from the cover) is a parrot. He always sings the same ol’ boring song to his owner, Peter. Pepi goes out to various places to increases his vocabulary and in the end sings a new hit song to Peter.

I always wonder how people choose names for their pet birds. In Japan, Popo or Chichi are pretty popular...

Pepi Sings a New Song is a great book and it sends home a good message to kids... stop singing that same ol’ boring song over and over again cuz people get sick of it! Get some new repetoire and increase your vocabulary...

Pepi ends up visiting five places (a music shop, a cake shop, an art goods shop, a market and a dog park) and for each place there is a two page spread of related illustrations. For young kids this is an excellent way for them to increase their vocabulary... I’m sure a few adults might find themselves learning a new word or two.

The illustrations are done in a “paper cut out” way... they may have been made with a computer. There are lots of vivid colors and I like how purple is used for the scenes at night.

I do wonder why “electric” and “bass” were not put into one speech bubble...

Pepi Sings a New Song is a worthwhile book to read. Reading it will allow kids to realize that there are lots of new words to learn and that a bigger vocabulary allows you to talk about (or in this book’s case... sing about) more interesting things.

Side note... I was driving a couple of weeks ago and saw a sign for a lost bird (a parrot type). There was a $500 reward.... I wonder if anyone found that bird.
