Owly & Wormy.jpg

Owly & Wormy Bright Lights and Starry Nights! was published by Atheneum Books for Young Reader. It was created by Andy Runton.

Owly is on the branch connected to his house with Wormy before sunset, waiting to do a bit of star gazing with his telescope. Wormy is scared of the dark so Owly sets up some candles... unfortunately when they look at the stars all that can be seen are branches. The next day they take a little hike to a hill and decide to camp out. There’s rain, they take shelter, the bats are scary, they return to the hill but drop the telescope, the owl goes back, they make friends with the bats... happy ending coming!

Owly & Wormy Bright Lights and Starry Nights! is about Wormy getting over his fear of the dark. I’m sure this theme has been covered in hundreds of other pictures books.

This book has no real text (except for the odd animal sounds). Sometimes little speech bubbles are used to convey emotions/communication.

Owly is an exceptionally cute character with his eyes taking up half of his body. Each scene is drawn in simple ways that everyone should understand. Part of the enjoyment of this book is trying to decipher how the characters feels... Andy Runton sure knows how to vary the looks/facial features of the characters.

A well written book that should be able to entertain people of all ages.
