79 - Asterix and Son

Asterixandson

Asterix and Son was published in 1983 and was written and illustrated by Albert Uderzo.

One day, Asterix gets a big surprise because there’s a baby in front of his house. Where did this baby come from?

It’s decided that Asterix will be in charge of the baby... but the baby keeps drinking the magic potion that makes the Gauls invincible. What a nightmare this little tyke is! He throws around the cows. He punches the chief’s wife. He breaks all the doors in the village. He caused havoc with the romans (this is a good thing!).

A and O go to the roman camps to ask questions but nothing is found out. On page twenty, we finally discover that the child is Caesar’s adopted son and Brutus wants his hands on the child. Why is he so eager to get this child? There’s a big surprise awaiting you at the end of this story.

Once you get to the end of Asterix and Son, you may roll your eyes at how ridiculous the story is. There is some unusual tension towards the end... but that gets resolved because of Obelix’s strength. The story is like a TV sitcom, where we can chuckle lightly at the baby doing crazy things.

I didn’t like this book too much but that’s probably because I don’t have kids of my own. It’s a light read (except for the unusually tense battle at the end), so if you fancy that, Asterix and Son might be an enjoyable read for you.
