143 - From Head to Toe - children's book review

From Head to Toe.jpg

From Head to Toe was published in Harper Collins Publishing in 1997. It was written and illustrated by Eric Carle.

This book doesn’t have a story. Every scene has an animal that does something unique. A child responds to the animals’ gestures and says, “I can do it”.

I wonder how Eric Carle created the animals/children in this story. They are full of color and seem to be made of some kind of collage. There’s certainly something primitive about his sense of art in this book but it all works out and it all has a certain sense of originality.

This book will probably be pretty fun for children to respond to what is being read. Children can also blurt out “I can do it” after doing the gesture/body movement.

The vocabulary that children can learn from From Head to Toe are verbs like “wave, bend, raise, clap, arch, kick, etc”. All useful words.

A good book!
