20 - I hate my computer... I really hate the thing... honest...

The I hate my computer club

The computer which I own is a Macbook Pro with a 15-inch screen.

I bought this thing about two years ago and it was the first computer I bought in my life.

You’re probably wondering why I purchased a computer so late in life.

A computer is a tool that’ll steal your time. Find a website that you like or go to some news sites for what you expect to be a few minutes, and lo and behold, an hour or two is gone. And how many of these websites actual benefit you?

I guess another reason I avoided taking the leap into the computer world was the monthly internet fees. I pay about 6000 yen a month (roughly $70) to “get connected”.

A person in this day and age without a computer might be regarded as an eccentric kook and in some ways I enjoyed people thinking of me as that.

Life was nice without a computer. I’d go home and read a book or watch a rental DVD. If I needed some kind of social contact I’d just go to a bar and talk with whoever was there.

Alas, after being nagged by and poked fun by many people, I gave in and my life has changed considerably since.

I wake up and the first thing I do is open my laptop computer. I browse the news, I check my email and I make sure to visit my Facebook account

I don’t know why this is but I check my Facebook account too frequently. Usually, I don’t expect too many messages. It’s after I post something that I have to check my Facebook account. When I’m at home, I have to frequently check to see if someone’s made contact with me. I’ve been posting scans of my drawings, every Tuesday, for the past seventy-seven weeks and I’m curious to see who’s checked out my stuff. Some people click the glorious “like” button and some even write short messages. Like a drug, this strange form of social contact actually stimulates my brain. It’s gotten up to a point where I force myself to post stuff right before leaving my house... that way I can forget about the computer because it isn’t right next to me. Does anyone else have this problem?

I suppose that’s what I hate about the computer. The fact that you want to get away from it, but as long as you’re in the house, you’ve just gotta open it (or turn it on) and check something out.

Bitch, bitch, groan, groan.

I have to admit that my computer’s pretty “bad-ass”. I had no idea what to expect buying a Macintosh computer. I heard they were fairly user-friendly and that a lot of “artists” (one of the most abused words that comes out of people’s mouths) use Macs. Macs are kind of like the BMW of computers. Sophisticated, cutting-edge and stylish.

The main reason I bought this thing was because... it’s in English. Sadly, it’s quite difficult to find a computer that has an operating system in English in Sapporo, Japan. Yup, that’s it.

The things I like about this computer are the programs that come included with it. I’ve used iPhotos for my drawing and photos. I’ve made a nice website with iWeb. The Garageband program allows you to record your voice. I’ve made a few DVDs with the iDVD program. And, Pages, is a half decent word processor. My computer hasn’t had any problems with any viruses since I bought it.

I guess that’s it... maybe I should’ve saved a bit of money and purchased a computer from abroad. I could’ve saved myself a thousand bucks... no! no! I shouldn’t be writing stuff like this. I’m sorry Macbook Pro. Forgive me for that vile comment.

Oh! I’m talking to the computer again. Maybe I should end this essay and make sure that I’m still sane
