184 - Duck Dunks

Duck Dunks was written by Lynne Berry and illustrated by Hiroe Nakata. It was published by Henry Holt and Company in 2008.

Five little ducks go to the beach and fool around. The end.

My description of the story is a bit short but there really isn’t a story here. It’s just about these five, wild and crazy, ducks that enjoy activities on the beach. They are goofy and foolish. They are simple minded and cooperative. They all have fun fun fun.

So what’s the point of this story? Going out in groups can be fun? Or is the author just trying to make a point about how enjoyable it is to go to a beach?

The illustrations by Hiroe Nakata are wonderfully done. They do remind me of some Japanese textbooks that I saw when I was a child. The ocean looks dreamy at times... the ducks have a bit of white space around them throughout (this must a stylistic thing).

I should mention that Duck Dunks is all rhyme. It all comes out pretty easily and parents should have no problem reading through this the first time with a “catchy” rhyme.
