Dear Big, Mean, Ugly Monster was written by Ruth Marie Berglin and illustrated by Carl DiRocco. It was published by Child & Family Press in 2005.

Joe is a tough kid (in his own mind) but he’s scared out of his wits every night because there’s a monster living under his bed. He decides to write a note to the monster. After a few misunderstandings the boy and the monster become good friends.

Dear Big, Mean, Ugly Monster seems to be a children’s book about using words to resolve misunderstanding.

This seems to be Berglin’s first children’s book. Some of the sentences tend to be a bit long, using conjunctions and relative clauses. This book might be suited for children older than five...

The illustrations use the full pages... there’s very little white space used in this story. The illustrator does a good job of varying the perspective in the boy’s room.

Well, Dear Big, Mean, Ugly Monster seems to be a nice story... but aren’t all children’s books nice stories.
