95 - Bob Saget in Vancouver hosting an evening of comedy in Vancouver

A couple of weeks ago I got bored and I clicked on Ticketmaster for upcoming shows in Vancouver. What caught my eye was Bob Sagat, that guy from Full House. I knew he did stand up and I visited Youtube to see what his routine is like. He’s one of the filthier comedians out there and this gave me enough motivation to go out and experience my first North American comedy show.

This show was promoted as “My Nasty Valentine”. I assumed that there would be other comedians on the program with Bob Sagat as the final act... I was wrong. Bob Sagat was the “host” and 7 other performers did roughly 15 minutes each.

Bob Sagat is quite crude but I think he doesn’t mean it in an evil way. Immediately he got the crowd under control especially the noisy drunks by telling them to “sit the fuck down” or something along those lines. He then proceeded to bash the Full House actors, indicating that his coworkers were homosexuals and that he had sexual relations with one of the younger female actresses. Sagat also chose one of the noisiest audience members (some rowdy drunk in the front row) and proceeded to abuse this person with small penis and diarrhea jokes.

Sagat later played the guitar and treated the audience to a song about having sex with an old lady in an old folk’s home (or something along those lines). I’d have to say the hardest part of the evening for Bob Sagat seemed to be to remember the names of that evening’s comedians (he had a cheat sheet on the floor of the stage).

The first comedian of the night was from New York. Sam Morril told many jokes about being single and banging girls. He used a lot of baseball analogies in a sexual way. His routine had very little structure, jumping from one sexual joke to another.

The next comedian was a young lady from Ottawa. Sophie Buddle talked about how her ex-boyfriend would cum in her mouth and that another ex-boyfriend had a short penis that couldn’t fulfill her. A heckler commented about her breasts at the beginning of her routine to which she replied, “Don’t fuckin’ talk to me”. The rhythm of her performance wasn’t to my liking but people seemed to enjoy her performance.

The comedian Toby Hargrave was next. He was quite good and talked a bit about his wife. Come to think about it I can’t really remember much about his act but it had some good moments.

There was a twenty minute intermission and the second set proceeded.

Patrick Maliha is an extremely quick thinker being able to do many impressions. He focused on offending the audience with a discussion that he had with his wife about “controversial” words. This went from the “n” word, to “cunt” to something related to vaginal bleeding (or something along those lines). His routine ended with a barrage of impressions (Bill Cosby, Arnold Schwarzengger - I think the spelling may be incorrect but I’m too lazy to check at the moment - and one more person whose name I didn’t hear).

I think the audience was getting a bit tired at this point (this was after an hour and a half of lots and lots of jokes) but Brendon Walsh managed to thrill the audience with his spiel about his crude friend who introduces him to the raunchiest kind of porno available. There was lots of talk about deep blow jobs and anal sex. I guess Walsh was making a commentary on the society that we live in. He managed to control the audience quite well and his routine was structured well as he expanded quite freely about his friend and this person’s wife... as far as I can remember he even gave the entire audience his friend’s email address (I’ve forgotten it by the way). After hearing what Walsh said about his friend I’m really not that tempted to get in touch with this fellow.

The final act was a duo (vocals and guitar) called The Wet Spots from Vancouver. They weren’t very well received by some people in the audience as there were quite a few heckles throughout the performance. Several people in the audience decided to depart early during this performance. I can’t say I was too keen on participating in the song about masturbation. They sang two other songs and I believe one was about dildos.

Well, it was quite the evening. I could laugh at some of the stuff on this night’s program and it was nice to get a sample of what a comedy show in a large hall is like.
