165 - Spoon by Amy Krouse Rosenthal - children's book review

Spoon was written by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and illustrated by Scott Magoon. It was published by Hyperion Books in 2009.

Spoon is feeling blue next to the blueberries. He can’t cut like the knife. He can’t stab things like the fork. And he isn’t exotic like the chopsticks. After a while he learns that he has some special qualities.

Spoon is a pleasant book... actually it’s a little too pleasant. The story is so simple and plain that you wonder how many times this type has story has been done in the past... you could probably make up variations on this with any object out there (an eraser... or a musical instrument, etc). The writing is fairly simple so really young kids should be able to understand everything.

The illustrator give all the objects cute little eyeballs, which make all the characters nice to look at.

By the end of this story Spoon’s mom helps him realize that it’s good to be a spoon. I guess it’s nice for some people to remind us why we are all somehow special.
