The Girl who Loved Wellies was written and illustrated by Zehra Hicks. It was published in 2012 by Macmillan Children’s Books.

Molly loves to wear her wellies (rubber boots... this seems to be what people call them in England). She loves them so much that she can never ever take them off! But one day she gets an itch between her toes. After having her shoes taken off, she discovers something and a new love affair begins.

The Girl who Loved Wellies can be read in a couple of minutes and it’s a fairly fun read because of the “loose” drawing style. The illustrations were all jotted  down pretty quickly with a lot of white space. By doing so, it helps the pace of the story move at a comfortable tempo, adding humor (when illustrations are done with too much detail/precision it can slow the reader down...).

The form of the story goes through variations on how hooked Molly is to her shoes and the ending leaves an open ended idea.

I think we all get attached to things in our lifetimes but there are always new things to be discovered. Is it good to be hooked to one thing for so long?

Also, it’s amazing how quickly we can forget about the old and enjoy the new.

The Girl who Loved Wellies is a delightful book to read and I’m sure we can all relate to how the protagonist feels.
