168 - When Blue Met Egg - children's book review

When Blue Met Egg.jpg

When Blue Met Egg was created by Lindsay Ward. It was published by Dial Books for Young Readers in 2012.

Blue (bird’s name) one morning in winter happens to find a snowball in her nest. She mistakes the snowball for an egg and tries to search for the mother. After a futile search, she decides to adopt the egg but then winter comes to an end...

This book has a few illogical points but since it’s a children’s story I guess I’m supposed to ignore these. The bird takes the snowball to a museum and also the opera... I don’t quite think it’s cold enough in these places to keep ol’ snowball cold enough.

In this story, Blue, the bird, is kind of dumb... or really naive. Plus, wouldn’t that egg be a little too cold to sleep next to... or wouldn’t this snowball have gotten pretty dirty towards the end of winter... more illogical stuff that I’m supposed to ignore.

The art is what keeps this story going. Ward is a “cut-paper” artist and does a very good job at it. There’s a fold out (this turns into a three page spread) of a bridge in New York... it’s all done in a simple yet effective way. It seems that pencil is used quite a bit in the drawings.

Well, if you can’t forget about the illogical points of the story you might enjoy reading this charming story about a naive... or really dumb bird.
