194 - Free Jazz Vancouver Plays O'Canada

Free Jazz Vancouver plays O’ Canada.

What a tune... and what a tune when you’ve had a few beers! Click here for the recording.

I’ll be completely honest. I’m not the type of guy that can remember lyrics. In my lifetime I’ve never sang this song from beginning to end from memory. I guess I wasn’t destined to be a singer.

I did go to a French immersion school when I was a child and was forced to sing it every day in French. “O’Canada nos terre de nos...” well, that’s about all I can remember. This sure says a lot about my memory but I think it’s the same for lots of people. How many of you can remember the French that you learned in high school?

I do wonder what the school system is like now with this tune. Are students forced to stand up before class and sing O’Canada? I thought it was a form of brainwashing, being forced to sing this tune every day. Well, considering my school had a mediocre music program (I can’t recall learning anything about music in the early years of elementary school) maybe it was a good thing to have some music sung in class.

O’ Canada is a song without controversy. I heard some Canadian females were protesting against the line “in all thy sons command”... to be honest I had never thought about this line that much but... the one part of O’Canada that I can’t really agree on is “God save our land”. Umm... which God would this be and what if you’re an atheist?

Will O’Canada ever be changed? Maybe we need to make a new version of O’Canada with different lyrics... anyone want to participate?
