145 - Doodleday - children's book review

Doodleday.jpg

Doodleday was written and illustrated by Ross Collins. It was published by Gullane Children’s books in 2011.

Harvey is around the house with some pencils. He’s about to doodle for fun but his mother freaks out before leaving the house. She tells him not to draw on Doodleday. Harvey does so anyway and his doodles appear in real life. There’s a fly, a spider, a bird and a giant squid and they all cause havoc. The day is saved by mom at the end.

This book is good... but I wished that the author pushed the story a little bit more. Only four illustrations by the boy didn’t feel like enough for me. I was a bit disappointed that the boy would have to scream for his mommy... Harvey’s a bit of a sissy!

Also, I’m wondering why the mother wouldn’t caution and explain to her son why he shouldn’t be doodling on Doodleday... well, if this was the case there probably wouldn’t have been a story.

Collins is an extremely talented illustrator and I’m sure all of this came out of “doodling”. I’d like to see what else he’s written. Doodleday has it’s good points and should entertain people.
